Rick (Matt Adler), a design student from Arizona, uses his winnings from a wave-tank surfing contest to travel to Hawaii and test himself against the legendary waves of Oahu's North Shore. He experiences a series of mishaps but, in time, is taught the ropes by Chandler (Gregory Harrison), a

veteran surfer who brings a religious devotion to the sport. En route to greater understanding and the inevitable big competition, Rick falls for a Hawaiian girl (Nia Peeples). Adler's and Harrison's performances are adequate, but the story line here is strictly for the surfin' birds, though the

wave riding is captured in splendid action photography. Former "Trapper John, MD" star Harrison, a real-life surfer, is credited with supervising the shooting of much of the surfing footage. Less pretentious than John Milius' BIG WEDNESDAY, NORTH SHORE is pleasant enough but not very engaging.
