Three yuppie ad men, out for a relaxing drink after work, heedlessly offend a table of hard-faced guys. Before the evening's done, one of the friends has been beaten to a bloody pulp, and that's not the end of it — far from it; this lunatic,

lushly beautiful and intensely paranoid tale of never-ending vengeance is only getting started. The guys are sensible Taki (Masaya Kato), hot-headed Nanbu (Riki Takeuchi) and chubby, passive Konishi (Hideo Nakano); they work for an agency whose next big account is Tokyo Security Guard, a private

security company that profits from increasing fear of crime and violence. Konishi, naturally, is the one who gets worked over, and Nanbu is the one lusting for revenge. The trio make a half-hearted attempt to find the guys from the bar, only to run into one of them quite by accident, under a

footbridge in the dark of night. So they beat him within an inch of his life, and then things get really nasty. Insinuating phone calls, ugly threats, another brutally violent attack; every incident ratchets up the stakes. Could the guys be Yakuza? Cops? Who knows — our protagonists

remain frustratingly ignorant of their tormentors' identities and ultimate intentions. Shundo Ohkawa's achingly handsome thriller panders to middle-class fears of random assault, of course, but it's also riddled with anxiety about the nature of masculinity in modern Japan. Nanbu is seething with

repressed aggression; Konishi is sadly emasculated. Even the apparently reasonable Taki is quick to believe his girlfriend's cheating and to retaliate by bedding a sluttish model. The film eventually paints itself into a corner and ends with a preposterous twist, but until then it's a sleekly

disturbing piece of work.
