Vaughn plays a college dropout avoiding the draft. He decides to hold up a supermarket so he can buy a boat and sail away from his troubles. Smith and Pittman are cohorts with troubles of their own--Smith needs money to pay off the medical bills of cheap hustler Anders, injured while on a

date with him, and Pittman is a failed writer who's just lost his wife (Nolan) because of his constant lying. The three attempt the heist, but Vaughn gets carried away and kills the store's manager. His pals are picked up by the cops, but Vaughn steals a truck and tries to flee to Mexico. There's

a spectacular chase that ends in a fiery death for Vaughn when his truck's brakes give out. This "new faces" presentation from Columbia is a fairly routine and turgid melodrama which uses the "young people in trouble" theme without much insight. It's all action and reaction without any feel for

character motivation. Many of the principal actors became television stars in the 1960s: Vaughn in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," Smith in "77 Sunset Strip," and Nolan in "The Real McCoys."
