The made-for-television counterpart to JACKSON COUNTY JAIL — also released in 1976 — this cautionary tale about innocent Northern girls in the old South exists in two versions: The original TV cut and a later version that contains some nudity and was released briefly to theaters before going to home video. Two college students, white Cathy Phillips (Deborah Raffin) and African-American Diane Emery (Lynne Moody), decide to drive from Philadelphia to are on their way UCLA, but take the long way around so they can see more of the country en route. Unfortunately, they get a flat tire in Badham County and anger racist Sheriff Danen (Chuck Conners, of the longrunning series Mannix) by refusing his sexual advances. He retaliates by railroading both girls, and rapes Diane while she's in his jail. Cathy and Diane are then sentenced by a corrupt judge (Ralph Bellamy) to 30 days at Warden Dancer's (Robert Reed, of The Brady Bunch) hellish prison farm. They're brutalized by lesbian inmates and sadistic guards (including Gilligan's Island star Tina Louise and Bond girl Lana Wood) and subjected to the full range of women-in-prison cliches.
