A creative combination of color and black-and-white photography helps to establish a unusual atmosphere for this story of two brothers, Hunter and Kennedy, who are newsreel cameramen for competing companies. The story takes place between the years 1949 and 1956, a period of great social and

political change in Australia, which influences not only the stories the brothers cover but also their personal lives. Hunter is unwilling to adapt to changes, preferring to remain at home with his camera recording events. Kennedy is more aggressive, always striving to better himself and

eventually leaving for Hollywood as television destroys the newsreel business. Realistic and fictional events are expertly integrated in this compelling narrative. Hunter gives a powerful performance and maintains a skillful command of the film. This was the feature debut for director Noyce (DEAD

CALM, PATRIOT GAMES). Technical credits and supporting cast are all top-notch.
