Four old friends, co-owners of a vintage boat, meet socially and trade barbs about their accomplishments. Thad (Todd Field) struggles to keep his restaurant afloat; Robert (Daniel Baldwin) exaggerates his success as an accountant. Whereas realtor Michael (Michael T. Weiss) hustles to sell properties and bed women, laid-back Woody (Craig Sheffer) doesn't exert himself on any score. When a buyer offers big bucks for their vessel, the quartet proposes a wager to resolve the issue of whether to sell. After moving to a new city, they must start over with a 100 dollar stake. Whoever accumulates the most money in a month will win sole ownership of the prized ship. Initially, aggressive Robert persuades religious investors to let him handle their portfolios, and cocky Michael sleeps his way into a job. Robbed in the park, timid Thad ends up washing windows, while easygoing Woody falls in with a band of neo-hippies. Then, Robert bungles some investments, and Michael's womanizing and drinking catches up with him. If hardship pushes the foursome into old patterns, the eventual outcome of the wager yields surprises. Crying into its own beer, this drippy buddy-buddy comedy celebrates male bonding of a genial kind and offers new variations on that favorite old prophecy about the meek inheriting the earth. To its credit, the film generates suspense and humor as we watch these immature men dig their own financial graves. Unfortunately, this simplistic odyssey sends them on a painful binge of self-discovery, only to solve everyone's problems with a group hug.
