bizarre side; and while Walker finds the chaos they bring a refreshing change, Belushi is by turns confused and appalled at the behavior of his new neighbors. Belushi and Aykroyd were cast here against their usual types (for once Aykroyd is wild, and Belushi is normal) with good effect, playing

well against audience expectations of the popular duo. Avildsen, however, is hardly a comedy director. Best known for his Oscar-winning ROCKY, he shows little sense of comic set-up and delivery. The result peters out about halfway through the film, with only touches of bizarre flavor in the rest.

A ridiculous, cartoonlike score by Conti doesn't help much. A box-office disappointment, this was to be Belushi's last picture. A few months after its release at Christmas, he was dead of a drug overdose.
