Rolling Stone Mick Jagger (PERFORMANCE) is a bit miscast but manages to hold his own in this film based on the life of Ned Kelly, one of Australia's most famous outlaws. Jagger begins a life on the other side of the law after being sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Upon

release, Jagger, his brothers, and their stepfather, Barry, become horse thieves and begin a reign of terror. The police pursue the robbers, but several of their number are killed by the gang in an ambush, which only intensifies the manhunt. Cleverly, the governor arrests Jagger's mother for the

murder in hopes the gang will come out of hiding. Jagger offers himself to the authorities in exchange for his mother, but the governor refuses. Eventually the gang is cornered in a saloon, but Jagger's brothers commit suicide rather than be taken alive. Jagger is captured, tried, and hanged. When

Jagger was first cast for NED KELLY, the producers also wanted his real-life girl friend, Marianne Faithfull, to play Ned Kelly's girl. Unfortunately, Faithfull became ill just before shooting, and she lost the role. Though not a bad film by any means, NED KELLY lacks the punch and energy that

would become characteristic of the "new" Australian cinema, perhaps because of its British director, Tony Richardson, who manages to sap the life of almost anything he touches (see THE BORDER or THE LOVED ONE). A better version of the same material appeared in 1976 starring Dennis Hopper in a film

called MAD DOG MORGAN.
