Eddie Johnson (Randy Quaid), a cousin of the vacation-disaster haunted Griswold family, has just experienced an unexpected bit of good luck. Mad Professor Doornitz (Fred Willard) has room in his budget for only one test subject and opts to keep a lab monkey instead of Eddie; his bosses decide that the best way to head off a discrimination suit is to bribe the newly unemployed Eddie with an all-expense paid junket to Hawaii. It's supposed to be for Eddie, his devoted wife, Catherine (Miriam Flynn), and their perpetually embarrassed son, Clark (Jake Thomas), but the company can hardly say no when relatives Audrey Griswold (Dana Barron) and Uncle Nick (Ed Asner) invite themselves on the trip. The Johnson party is welcomed by Muka Laka Miki (Sung Hi Lee), a company employee based in Hawaii, and Eddie promptly takes his sight-seeing clan on a sailing trip that goes horribly wrong by virtue of Eddie's nautical inexperience. A shark attacks their boat, Eddie sails them all to a deserted and then forgets to tie up the vessel. But once they're well and truly stranded, Eddie rises to the occasion, killing a pig and building a hut. The Johnson-Griswold clan pitches in to make their island Christmas a festive one, and the experience draws them closer together. They're eventually rescued by millionaire hotelier/aviator, but Eddie accidentally gives him a concussion and he passes out mid-flight. Does doofus Eddie have one more surprise kill up his sleeve?
Apparently designed to cash in on the popularity of TV's Lost and Survivor, longtime Lampoon producer concocted a scatalogical farce whose idiocy makes Chevy Chase-era Lampoon vehicles seem like dryly sophisticated Ernst Lubitsch comedies by comparison.
