Serpico meets Rashomon in this chilly, fractured police thriller about a disgraced undercover detective (Jason Patric) who takes a dubious assignment in hopes of salvaging his career and gets mired in lies, corruption and conflicting loyalties. The chemistry between bad cop Patric and worse cop Ray Liotta is electric, and writer-director Joe Carnahan carefully metes out information in a series of contradictory flashbacks: The more you learn, the nastier the story gets.
