A plane develops engine trouble and appears to be going down. Baxter and Carey, a couple en route to Hawaii for their eighth anniversary, bare all to each other in what they believe to be their last moments together. She begs forgiveness for being an overdemanding, selfish wife. He forgives

her and then makes the mistake of confessing about having had an affair three years ago with her best friend, McLeod. Baxter, it seems, is not quite as forgiving. She fantasizes all sorts of tortures for her husband, including imagining herself as both Joan of Arc and Cleopatra, each giving Carey

historically appropriate punishments. After the plane has landed safely in their home base, Carey gets the silent treatment from Baxter until he has his wife's minister, Kellaway, talk to her about forgiving and forgetting. After that, Baxter goes through several stages in her attempt to deal with

her husband's affair, including working like a slave to help his business and then making a big play for his boss, Erickson. But the couple is reconciled in the end when Carey admits that the affair was all basically in his mind. It seems that after he made his big move on McLeod, he passed out

from one too many martinis. While the script is imaginative, this film pulls all the stops trying to be overly humorous when a more sedate, witty style would have been more appropriate. As it is, MY WIFE'S BEST FRIEND works in parts but fails to work overall.
