In the early part of the 20th century, Denison is an Englishman who dreams of becoming a great surgeon and marrying Campbell. But after Denison finishes medical school, his father dies, and Denison must return home to support his mother and send brother Howard to school. Denison is forced

to accept a partnership in an impoverished practice in a small industrial town and watch in dismay as Campbell ends up with Howard. When Howard is killed during WW I, Campbell later gives birth to his illegitimate son. Denison marries Campbell, but she dies in childbirth and her son becomes his

responsibility. Denison marries Gray, and together they raise the boy. The story is told in flashback by Murray, the grown boy from Campbell and Howard's union. Essentially a soaper, the story is well told and nicely acted, though it has an artificial look that clearly shows its studio production.

This was common in British postwar films.
