Never as funny as its advertising copy, MUTANT OF THE BOUNTY is a science-fiction spoof that borrows heavily from John Carpenter's low-budget cult classic DARK STAR. Max (Kyle T. Heffner) is the sax-playing title creature, who's been traveling through space as a beam of particle light

for 23 years when he's intercepted by the crew of the spaceship, "Bounty." The "Bounty" crew is a motley one, comprising a perky blonde magazine writer (Deborah Benson); a laid-back ship's officer (John Furey); his uptight counterpart (John Roarke); an indecipherable French doctor (Victoria

Catlin); and a haywire, cross-dressing android (John Fleck). Pursuing Max are two petty criminals (Scott Williamson and John Durbin), who plan to use a vial of deadly virus in Max's possession to hold a planet hostage. While establishing its characters and premise, MUTANT OF THE BOUNTY manages to

be moderately amusing, making a humorous asset of its poverty-row production budget. The cast works well together and the script, written by coproducer Martin Lopez from a story by Lopez and coproducer-director Robert Torrance, gives them a few zingy lines and some funny situations to work with.

Unfortunately, once the plot proper kicks in MUTANT OF THE BOUNTY goes slack, lifeless, and predictable.
