When Santa Claus shows signs of decline, his corporate helpers, CEO Tuttle (Dabney Coleman) and assistant Natalie Fairlie (Deanna Mulligan) go headhunting for a suitable candidate. Although the North Pole office selects a wholesome replacement, the actual transfer of power gets accidentally shifted to the wrong man, Floyd Court (Arnold Pinnock). In fact, when Tuttle bumps into him at a mall, Floyd is actively tempting fate &#151 he's got a criminal record &#151 by trying to shoplift a toy for his estranged daughter, Heather (Keenan Macwilliam). Although Tuttle tries to undo his snafu, why halt progress? Reunited with Heather, Floyd tries to make up for lost time, reform his ways, and prove he's real Santa material. While 1997's MS. SCROOGE, an African-American version of A Christmas Carol, updated its classic material with street smarts, this rethinking of the Santa legend isn't similarly inspired. It's like being more impressed by a gift's expensive wrapping than the gift itself. Promoting Christmas as a Fortune 500 business is innately satirical &#151 isn't it? &#151 but the script doesn't take full advantage of its comic potential, choosing instead to choke back tears as the antihero busily redeems himself.
