This intelligent, witty comedy deals with the problems confronting a chubby office clerk when he marries an attractive woman from out of town. Hrusinsky, in a wonderfully clumsy manner, proposes to Fialova, with encouragement from his assistant manager, Voska. However, because she lives a

great distance away in Prague, they do not have much time together. She also complains of a childhood trauma that prevents them from ever consummating the marriage. To be closer to his wife, Hrusinsky asks Voska to transfer him to Prague. The request is denied, and before long it is discovered

that Fialova and the assistant manager are having an affair. Hrusinsky entertains thoughts of a double murder and suicide but decides instead to blackmail Voska for a better-paying job. This is a fine example of Czech cinema from veteran director Weiss.
