Oguri's moving, beautiful, and sensitive debut film was was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign-Language Film in 1981. Set in Japan in 1956, MUDDY RIVER details the lives of two young boys in a country still trying to recover from WW II. Asahara lives in a restaurant run by his

parents. One day an old, weather-beaten houseboat docks nearby. Sakurai, a boy about Asahara's age, emerges from the boat where he lives with is older sister and mother. The boys become best friends. Asahara is confused, however, as to why he is never allowed onto the houseboat to meet Sakurai's

mother. Eventually Asahara learns the truth when he spots Sakurai's mother earning her living as a prostitute. Sensing that the surrounding community has tolerated her presence long enough, Sakurai's mother gathers her children on the boat and sails off to another location, with Asahara chasing

the houseboat as it pulls away. Outstanding performances by the children and stunning black-and-white photography make this a film well worth watching. (In Japanese; English subtitles.)
