HULOT'S HOLIDAY takes place at a coastal resort in Brittany. Chaos seems to follow Hulot wherever he goes, but he somehow makes it through life without ever really noticing. Like all vacationers, Hulot (and director Tati) spends a great deal of time observing other vacationers. There is the comely

Martine (Nathalie Pascaud), whom Hulot would like to get to know better, but is too shy to confront directly; the workaholic businessman (Jean-Pierre Zola, later seen in MY UNCLE) who cannot stop to relax; the burly British old maid (Valentine Camax); the besieged waiter (Raymond Carl); the former

military man who still thinks he's leading a battalion (Andre Dubois); the beachcombing couple (Rene Lacourt and Marguerite Gerard), and countless other unidentified persons who are equally important to the scenery. There is no plot (as the prologue warns us), only a seemingly endless stream of

events--with and without Hulot--that carry the film through to the end. With very little dialogue and a creative use of sound, Tati (the actor and director) gives us an entirely new way of looking at a very familiar landscape.
