Stewart plays a midwestern banker who rents a cottage at the seashore for a relaxing vacation with his family. Things get off to a bad start when their hideaway turns out to be a spooky dump that drives their live-in cook out of the kitchen permanently. Moreover, despite the miles of beach

outside, couch-potato son Burns remains transfixed before the TV set, and young Peters refuses to be seen in public with her new braces. Two other daughters, Trundy and Gentle, show up with their deadbeat husbands, while the attractive Mrs. Hobbs (O'Hara) is kept busy fending off a local

yachtsman's advances. Disaster piles upon disaster in this satire of family togetherness, but Stewart, in another of his solid, humane characterizations, manages to pull his family through the nightmarish holiday. Whirlwind direction, witty quips from screenwriter Nunnally Johnson, and the

seasoned Stewart's likability ensure that the laughs keep coming in this fun film.
