The third in the series of Gundam movies compiled from the 1979 Japanese animated TV series, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM III was released in 1982 and included some new animation to tidy up its epic saga of a future civil war in space.

After refueling on earth, the Federation battleship White Base heads into space to link up with the larger Federation Army. The ship makes a stop on Side 6, a neutral space colony where Gundam pilot Amuro Ray meets Char Aznable (as well as Char's beautiful protege Lalah Sun) face to face for the

first time.

Behind-the-scenes political machinations within the Zeon Archduchy result in Degin Zabi, the ruler of Zeon, being caught in Zeon's solar ray while petitioning for peace with the Federation. In a subsequent battle, Amuro feels a psychic connection with Lalah Sun, who is piloting the new Zeon craft,

and determines they are both "New Types" (young people with heightened psychic sensibilities and skills); Lalah is killed in the battle.

Federation and Zeon forces engage in fierce battle in space over the moon; the destruction is so complete that the combatants wind up fighting hand-to-hand on the surface of the moon, amidst the ruins of an old base. As the moon base is set to explode, Amuro psychically contacts the rest of the

White Base crew and directs each of them to appropriate escape routes. The crew members all receive his signals and make it off the moon in a small launch as the moon base and White Base explode.

In this edition, compiled from the last 13 episodes of the original 43-part series with substantial new animation, the characters become more aware of their New Type capabilities and Amuro Ray has his fateful meeting with his beautiful New Type counterpart Lalah Sun. The condensation of the

narrative and the inclusion of so many technical details and political maneuvers leads to some confusion and awkward jumps in the narrative. Still, it ranks as a superb representative sample of one of the best animated series to come out of Japan and was followed by subsequent "Gundam" TV

programs, OAV (original animation video) series, and two more movies, including CHAR'S COUNTERATTACK (1988) which finishes up the story of Amuro and Char. (Violence.)
