Mercy: Review

After several upscale females are murdered in apparently unrelated cases, Detective Catherine Palmer (Barkin) discovers the common thread of lesbianism in their backgrounds. To catch the serial killer who's responsible, Catherine must rely on the seductive yet troubled Vickie Kittrie (Peta Wilson), a gold card member of the exclusive circle in which these ladies traveled. Suppressing her own latent bisexuality, Catherine tries to keep her cool as the victim list grows to include Vickie. As she penetrates the network of sapphic swingers, Catherine encounters an oddball shrink, Dr. Broussard (Julian Sands), who treats many of Vickie's chic gal-pals. Breaching propriety, Broussard sleeps with his patients but hides an even kinkier secret than that. Does the impetus behind the slayings stem from one of Broussard's patients or from Miriel Farr (Ellen-Ray Hennessy), an S&M matchmaker who may have been dabbling in blackmail? This sleazy shambles of an erotic thriller is a distaff version of CRUISING — only not as good. Having overdosed on screenings of BASIC INSTINCT, writer-director Damian Harris hasn't the slightest clue what to do with the borrowed innuendo he mistakes for plot points; as it is, character motivation is something viewers must infer like blind tidbits in a tabloid gossip column. And lesbianism is never innate, of course, but instead unhappy result of paternal incest. Although NIKITA star Wilson sizzles with allure, everyone else looks highly uncomfortable — like Baptists who've just discovered their convention must share hotel space with a GLAAD reunion. --Robert Pardi
