MAYERLING is one of the greatest love stories ever brought to the screen, the bittersweet, painfully poignant romance between the star-crossed Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria and his adoring mistress, Marie Vetsera. Charles Boyer, in a riveting performance, is Rudolph, son of the powerful

Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria-Hungary. A free spirit who associates with radicals and gypsies, Rudolph is also a prisoner of his royal blood. Everywhere there are court spies assigned to track and trail the errant heir to the throne. Eluding his followers at a fair, he meets 17-year-old Marie

Vetsera (Danielle Darrieux), and it's love at first sight, although Marie has no idea that he is the prince as the couple enjoys such little pleasures as tossing rings around a swan's neck and watching a puppet show. The following night, Marie attends the opera and is startled to see the handsome

young man from the fair sitting in the royal box. Though she comes from an aristocratic family, she has no hope of reaching so high. Instead, Rudolph reaches out to her, meeting secretly with the beautiful young woman. Only in Marie's presence does Rudolph find joy and peace; she responds to him

with an innocence he has never encountered. When their liaison is discovered, however, the lovers must depart to a country hunting lodge from which they will never return. Based on fact, this story of an impossible love is told on a grand, exquisite scale by Anatole Litvak, and represents one of

the high points of the director's spotty career. Filled with dreamy dissolves and fluid, nearly waltzlike camera movements, the film is a brilliant technical achievement, further enhanced by the wonderful performances of the two leads--the debonair Boyer and the ravishing Darrieux, who was then

just 21 years old.
