It's as if Fassbinder never happened: This altogether despicable, purportedly "gay" farce from Germany -- where it's the highest grossing domestic film to date -- is a refresher course in stereotypes, portraying gay life in terms even Hollywood hasn't dared touch

since the '70s. After his girlfriend kicks him out, handsome Axel (Til Schweiger) begrudgingly moves in with Norbert (Joachim Krol), a lonely gay man who, along with his equally miserable friends, has little better to do with his life than dress up as a milkmaid, get drunk and watch DEATH IN

VENICE for the umpteenth time. Smitten by Axel's good looks (it seems gay men can't help themselves when it comes to muscular blonds, particularly when they're straight), Norbert falls desperately in love and lets Axel walk all over him. The whole depressing mess carries the explicit reassurance

that sexuality is genetically determined, so unless there's fruit hanging somewhere on the family tree, there's no need to panic.
