MARTHA JELLNECK is the slow-moving but touching tale of an elderly woman living alone in a small apartment in some unnamed city in modern Germany, with only her dog, Chico, to keep her company. Martha is unable to leave her apartment because of disabling arthritis, which makes walking

down stairs impossible for her. Others visit her, including Thomas, a delivery boy he brings her meals. One of his other customers is named Arthur Loeb, which is the name of Martha's long lost half-brother, and she is determined to find out if the man is her relative. Her investigation leads her

to a startling discovery, however. Set completely inside Martha's apartment, the movie conveys a strong sense of Martha's isolation, creating an atmosphere of intensity and urgency around her administration of revenge. The emotional effect of the young people's visits is also made vivid. In this

respect, MARTHA JELLNECK is a rare look at the isolation and loneliness in which the elderly are forced to exist. Heidemary Hatheyer, who starred in several German productions of the 1940s and 50s, returned to the screen here after a 25-year absence. She gives a touching portrayal of this woman

who knows her days are numbered but refuses simply to lie down and die. (In German; English subtitles.)
