Sleazy 19th-Century Edinburgh is the backdrop for respectable doctor Cushing's immoral manner of medical research. A couple of hoods, Rose and Pleasence, aid Cushing by murdering townsfolk and letting him study the bodies. Their killing spree goes too far when they make corpses out of one

of the doctor's pupils, his girl friend, and a well-liked community member. The duo is caught, and Rose goes to the gallows while Pleasence is grabbed by an angry mob that burns out his eyes. Cushing, meanwhile, maintains his community standing in an admirable dramatic role. Some excessive gore

adds even more texture to the dreary atmosphere. The story is based on actual events that occurred in Scotland in the early 19th Century involving Burke and Hare.
