MAN OUTSIDE features Robert Logan as lawyer Jack Avery, who runs his Porsche into the Arkansas backwoods and stays there, living off the land as a hermit. Anthropology professor Grace Freemont (Kathleen Quinlan) heads off to investigate why Avery has exiled himself out there, and they

begin a touch-and-go romance that sputters on through the rest of the film. The plot becomes complicated when a local boy is kidnaped by psycho Frank Simmons (Bradford Dillman), and the evidence points to Avery as the pervert. MAN OUTSIDE marks the feature directorial debut of nature documentarist

Mark Stouffer, so it should come as no surprise that there are lots of scenic shots of the Arkansas countryside. The story, however, sticks to tried-and-true formulas and is far too drawn out, with the same territory being covered time and again so that the movie never gathers any momentum. Logan

and Quinlan work well together, with nice support from Levon Helm (COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER; END OF THE LINE) as the sheriff. Dillman's performance, on the other hand, is absurd and annoying, as is much of the backing score.
