A goddess who is actually a 1,000-year-old white snake falls in love with a drugstore clerk who had saved her in another lifetime. In order to repay him, she takes the form of a beautiful woman and marries him. Their life is idyllic until a Buddhist monk informs the clerk of his wife's

true origin. He gives the man three amulets to reduce her power, but she overcomes the charms. One day the clerk sees her in her reptilian form and dies from fright. The goddess revives her husband with a magic red mushroom obtained from the Holy Land. The monk returns and forces the man to

magically fly to Mount Chin. There he pleads with Fa-hai, the God of All, to allow the marriage between the mortal and goddess. The god tries to kill the man by creating a flood, but he escapes. The god engages him in a battle once more and this time kills him. When the husband arrives in heaven,

he finds his goddess spouse already there. This film, produced by the very successful Shaw Brothers, was based on a Chinese fairy tale (later made into the film GREEN SNAKE by director Tsui Hark).
