to his fleet, she vows to remain faithful to him. Three years later Grant returns to Japan with his American wife (to whom he has confessed the previous marriage) and goes to the home of Sidney to break the news. Sidney, having made elaborate preparations for her husband's homecoming, answers the

door with Grant's child (which she bore in his absence) in her arms. Meeting with an impossible situation, Sidney gives the child to her family and commits suicide. Remade in 1941 as THE DREAM OF BUTTERFLY.
