An old Mexican peasant fable is brought to the screen with slick professionalism and adherence to the period the fable depicts. Tired of his extreme poverty, Torres goes on a hunger strike until the day when he can have an entire turkey to himself. To appease her husband, Pellicer steals a turkey and gives it to her husband even though her children went to bed hungry. While Torres is about to consume the turkey in the woods he is persuaded by Death to share some of it in return for magical powers which will allow him to heal the sick, on condition that Death agrees to the person being cured. His new power makes Torres a celebrity until he is accused of being an instrument of the devil. The last chance for him to vindicate himself is to come to the aid of the Viceroy's son. But Death decides that this boy should not be cured, so Torres is forced to flee, later dying. In 1961, the picture was nominated for Best Foreign Film, but lost to THE VIRGIN SPRING.
