An interesting, if overblown, version of the infamous Italian family of the Renaissance. Armendariz is the sadistic brother of Carol. In his drive for power he controls her every move. She's got her own troubles after a terrible sexual experience with her first husband. She is now in love

with Serato and ultimately tries poisoning her brother to save Serato's life. A nice feel for the times is created by the film's mise-en-scene, through historically accurate costuming and set design. The wide-screen is also well employed, particularly in the highly brutal battle scenes, as well as

in some orgies. The latter displayed an abundance of naked female flesh which the American audiences of 1953 were certainly unaccustomed to. Though in parts the film starts to drag, the direction manages to hold interest.
