James Hadley Chase's novel I'll Get You for This (aka: High Stakes) was the basis for this crime adventure that had the advantages of Italian scenery and the drawbacks of some shabby acting in the secondary roles. Raft is an American gambler vacationing in Italy. The management of a

gambling resort invites him to stay and be a front man for them because his name means something in the international gaming community (this actually happened to Raft when he went to live in England and fronted a gaming club), but it's a ruse. Raft is slipped a Mickey, and when he wakes up he's

been framed for the murder of a US Treasury agent who was on the trail of an interesting conspiracy: the casino bosses have been manufacturing counterfeit dollars with plates that the Germans had hoped to use in WW II to undermine US currency. Gray is an American who has lost her money at the

tables, and she and Raft get involved in the various plot turns, racing through the Riviera scenery with Goldner, an Italian investigator, and Staiola, a little boy they pick up. (You might recall him from THE BICYCLE THIEF.) Raft succeeds in nabbing the culprits and clearing his name, then

returns to the tables and his vacation, with Gray on his arm. A few good lines in the picture, among them one from a very "inside" scene in which Raft takes Gray's hand at a nightclub. A tango begins in the background and she innocently inquires, "Do you tango?" Raft lets a hint of a glint come

into his eye, then answers, "I used to." A lovely remembrance of the days when Raft tripped the light fantastic. British actor Goldner will be best recalled as the first mate on Alec Guinness's ship in THE CAPTAIN'S PARADISE.
