conclusion. Joyeux gives a rich, honest portrayal of a young girl in love and makes the seemingly tired plot fresh and energetic. She's given good support by the cast under tightly controlled direction. The design accurately captures Paris in the 1880s. Released in France in 1943, four years

before the director's hugely successful DEVIL IN THE FLESH, LOVE STORY appeared nearly simultaneously with DEVIL in the U.S. It suffered by comparison, and was also hampered by poor subtitling. (In French; English subtitles.)
