The French rock-'n'-roll scene serves as the backdrop for this rather-bland tale of modern-day relationships. Deneuve is a talent agent whose marriage has hit a dry spot. The tension between her and husband Mancuso, the archetypal writer suffering from a creative block, has grown so that

they have decided to separate. Hoping to find inspiration, Mancuso relocates to Montreal, leaving Deneuve to bring up her two children while pursuing a career. When she discovers a new pop-music duo--Lambert and Anconina--her life becomes even more hectic. She falls in love with Lambert, he

ignores Michel, and the rest of this sad song plays like the B side of a broken record. On the plus side, LOVE SONGS features a great cast, and Deneuve (who alone almost makes this worth watching), Lambert, and Anconina temporarily overshadow the banality of the script and direction. Worst of all

is the music--by Legrand (who also composed the music for Deneuve's great UNMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG). The videocassette is poorly dubbed French into English.
