LOVE ON THE RUN is the fifth and final entry in Francois Truffaut's "Antoine Doinel" series, which began in 1959 with THE 400 BLOWS. By now the young, unpredictable Antoine (Jean-Pierre Leaud) has grown into a man of 34, able to reminisce about his past loves and put them into his new

book. The picture opens with the unshaven Antoine and his newest love, Sabine (Dorothee, in a wonderful debut performance), awakening to a sunny morning--the morning that he is to get a divorce from his wife, Christine (Claude Jade, from 1971's BED AND BOARD). Before the day is over Antoine also

encounters his first love, Colette (Marie-France Pisier, who appeared years before in Truffaut's episode of LOVE AT TWENTY). There is actually very little in LOVE ON THE RUN that resembles a story. Its chief purpose is simply to look back at the women Antoine has loved. Like so many of Truffaut's

characters, Antoine is obsessed with the desire to love, and here he tells how he found a ripped-up, discarded picture of Sabine in a phone booth and set out to find her. In the process, clips are shown from THE 400 BLOWS; LOVE AT TWENTY; STOLEN KISSES; and BED AND BOARD, amounting to an overview

of the life of Doinel (as well as those of both Leaud and Truffaut). For those who haven't seen any of the previous "Doinel" pictures, LOVE ON THE RUN will probably be a difficult picture to sit through, but for those who have followed the growth of these characters, the film is a true charmer. In

keeping with other Truffaut films, LOVE ON THE RUN includes a superb score from Georges Delerue and a perfectly hummable title song from Alain Souchon.
