Another piece of obsessive work by James Toback, the maker of FINGERS, the more accessible LOVE AND MONEY is better focused but less intense than the earlier film. Investment counselor Ray Sharkey is bored with his routine life and with his librarian girl friend, Susan Heldfond. Business

magnate Klaus Kinski asks for his assistance in setting up business in a small, silver-rich Latin American country, and Sharkey gets more excitement, violence, and intrigue than he bargained for. Sharkey lacks the passion required for his role, and he is totally outshone by the Kinski and Ornella

Muti (as Kinski's wife). The Los Angeles backlots are an unconvincing substitute for Central America. LOVE AND MONEY was the Hollywood debut for Italian star Muti, and it also featured a performance by legendary director King Vidor, who was then 87 years old.
