The title of this film was taken from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's book, but the story is adapted from an English play entitled, "Service." It is a Depression parable with Barrymore laid off from his position at a London shop because of tight times. He had worked there for 40 years

and had come from a family of men who spent their lives working at the shop. Stone is the man who must let Barrymore go, only to sell his shop to a lower-priced competitor. Most of the film focuses on Stone and his family, with Barrymore essentially in a supporting role.
