A highly-polished romantic thriller--reminiscent of VERTIGO--set in Amsterdam and starring Hoffman and Anthony as a happily married and financially successful couple. When Anthony is killed in an automobile accident while on her way to London, Hoffman is plunged into depression. After a

year, his love for his wife is reborn when he meets a woman named Eileen, who looks exactly like his dead wife. Hoffman becomes obsessed with the woman while she tries to escape his attentions. A peculiar, somewhat illogical tale of love which begins on a stunning note but gradually sinks into

confusion. The direction is dynamic, the cinematography gorgeous, the soundtrack pulsating, and the emotions powerful. The film's fault is its tendency to sink to the ridiculous. Had the script and characterization been better developed, LOOKING FOR EILEEN could have been a superb tale of romantic

obsession. Instead, it is a half-intriguing, half-emptyheaded film that stretches belief to the breaking point. LOOKING FOR EILEEN is similar to van den Berg's previous film BASTILLE. Both are based on novels by Leon de Winter and concern life's ambiguities, obsession and memory, and physical

resemblances.
