Griffith stars as a woman who loses custody of her child during a bitter divorce. She takes to the world of jazz nightclubs, eventually becoming a gold digger. But her descent in social status continues with her arrest for vagrancy. Some nice nightclub song and dance numbers including "I'd

Like To Be a Gypsy" are the few brief moments of happiness in Griffith's otherwise doomed story. Though the film is well done and convincingly realistic, the audiences of 1930 found the story too depressing, and the box office receipts were an embarrassment. Korda's direction is excellent,

however, taking the story nicely toward its inevitable conclusion. Remake of a 1924 film of the same name, also starring Griffith.
