Despite Johnson's well-crafted adaptation of the play, this remains a talk piece that shows its stage heritage throughout. Woolley is a famed theater actor who has recently gone downhill as a result of his dependence upon grain spirits. His crippled daughter, Lupino, is concerned about his

well-being, but he rewards her, and everyone around him, with darts of caustic wit. As his drinking gets heavier, he finds it increasingly difficult to find employment, and his barbs become sharper. Lupino continues to stay by daddy's side until Wilde, a composer, arrives to fetch her heart away.

He helps Lupino in her desire to reacquaint the theatrical community with Woolley's talents. The bearded one is wary at first of Wilde's motives and fears that he will lose Lupino to the dark and dashing man. After some odd jobs (including one as a department store Santa Claus), Woolley accepts an

offer to appear as "King Lear," and he is triumphant. He then takes up with a rich old flame, Allgood, and allows Wilde and Lupino to have their moment together. Wilde and Lupino do well in the roles conceived by Johnson who changed the locale from London to New York in his screenplay. Simply

wonderful in one of his patented acerbic roles, Woolley, who was very much the same off-stage as he was on, could always be counted on for a fine performance.
