Mastroianni is an exiled European monarch who returns to London after many years away. The area where his mansion is located has become a black ghetto, but Mastroianni is oblivious to his surroundings; he is absorbed in bird-watching. In time Mastroianni notices the plight of his

neighbors through his telescope, but he moves into action only after Jones is forced into prostitution. He takes her in as his ward and tries to involve himself in the problems of the ghetto. The monarch's royal guardsmen revolt, taking over his house and arming themselves. Mastroianni and the

neighborhood folk band together, defeat the guards with fireworks, and burn down the mansion. A pretentious, heavy-handed satire of the class structure and European royalty. Director Boorman tries to say much in this film, but little is clearly stated.
