Philipe plays a 19th-century opportunist whose social position has left him with an overall cynical attitude. His outlook changes when he falls in love with a charming maiden. This picture was the third attempt at a screen adaptation of the French classic by Stendhal, and perhaps remains closest to the source material. (In French; English subtitles.)
