A less-than-brilliant comedy from Philippe de Broca, LE CAVALEUR centers on classical pianist Edouard Choiseul (Jean Rochefort), a childish man with a monstrous ego who believes that the world revolves around him and his whims. Despite the fact that he has a beautiful wife (Nicole Garcia),

a friendly ex-wife (Annie Girardot), a devoted agent (Lila Kedrova), a sexy mistress (Catherine Alric), charming children, and a successful career, Edouard is not content, and treats everyone with contempt. He leaves his mistress waiting for him at the train station, lies to his wife about his

affairs, and awakens his ex-wife and her husband in the middle of the night by barging into their apartment to play the piano. His family and friends finally agree that he has pushed them too far for too long, and eventually Edouard is left without any female companionship. It takes this drastic

turn of events to shock Edouard into changing his life, transforming him from a skirt chaser into the devoted teacher of a gifted young pianist. De Broca has assembled a superb cast that also includes a brief appearance by Danielle Darrieux as the woman with whom Edouard has his first affair

during the Liberation. Unfortunately, Edouard is such a despicable character and his comeuppance so predictable that one hardly becomes enamored of him or the film. (In French; English subtitles.)
