A calculated, slow-paced thriller set in the French countryside, where schoolteacher Audran begins a new assignment. She is soon romanced by the village butcher, Yanne, though she seems more concerned with her schoolchildren than with finding a lover. In the meantime, the village is

stricken with random murders. Audran finds herself directly involved when a young girl's body is found near the schoolyard. During a school outing, she and the children take a lunch break and eat their sandwiches outdoors. One girl, who is sitting next to a cliff, suddenly finds blood dripping

onto her bread. Above her is discovered yet another butchered body. Audran's suspicions are raised when she finds Yanne's cigarette lighter next to the body, but the clever, deranged killer is one step ahead of her and buys an identical lighter. By the finale, Audran's concern has turned into

deadly fear as she barricades herself inside her house.

LE BOUCHER is a compelling psychological thriller that occasionally gets bogged down and fails to reach the level of suspense that could have been achieved. Like the psychopathic killer of little girls in Fritz Lang's M, Yanne's character is presented in a manner which is calculated to stir a

measure of audience sympathy: he is a man with good qualities who is unable to help himself. Audran, the real-life wife of director Chabrol and star of three of his films, gives a compelling performance, but she is simply too sophisticated to come across as a country schoolteacher.
