The second installment in Eric Rohmer's "Comedies and Proverbs" series, LE BEAU MARIAGE is the charming tale of Sabine (Beatrice Romand), a university student with a Paris flat who decides one day, quite arbitrarily, to get married. All she is lacking is a husband, a minor detail. She

leaves her painter boyfriend, quits her antique-store job, and begins pursuing Edmond (Andre Dussollier), a busy lawyer who is friendly to Sabine but clearly not interested in romancing her. This thoroughly enjoyable picture is carried by the spunky, idiosyncratic performance of Romand, who

appeared 12 years earlier in Rohmer's "Moral Tale," CLAIRE'S KNEE. Two of her costars in this film would also be rewarded with lead roles in subsequent Rohmer films--Arielle Dombasle, who appears in PAULINE AT THE BEACH, and Sophie Renoir (cast here as Romand's pesty little sister), who stars in

Rohmer's final "Comedies and Proverbs" entry, BOYFRIENDS AND GIRLFRIENDS. There's also a fine synthesized pop score that you may find yourself humming long after the film's end. In French with English subtitles.
