At the center of this curious and brutal prison drama is Richard Berry, an unemployed actor who is arrested as an accomplice when he comes to the aid of beautiful shoplifter Victoria Abril. While serving a short sentence, he inadvertently gets involved in a prison break during which guard

Richard Bohringer is shot in the knee. When apprehended, Berry becomes the victim of the now-crippled Bohringer's psychotic terrorism. Doing his best to emulate Hollywood, director Denis Amar has come up with a compelling picture that pits two intense personalities in a violent, existential

battle. Like the main character in Robert Bresson's 1984 film L'ARGENT (which is, in all ways, vastly superior to L'ADDITION), Berry is caught in a Dostoyevskian swirl of fate that begins with a minor infraction and builds to murder. Unfortunately, all three of the main characters in this film are

hollow shells, existing only as cogs in Amar's filmmaking machinery. Nonetheless, the always impressive Bohringer creates a mysterious, dangerous monster, and while not his best performance, it did earn him a Cesar as Best Supporting Actor. Beware that the voices in the dubbed videocassette

version are all unnervingly American.
