Forest Whitaker

Forest Whitaker's mesmerizing performance as Idi Amin drives Kevin Macdonald's adaptation of Giles Foden's 1998 novel about the dictator's reign of terror, which left Uganda's once-thriving economy in ruins and at least 300,000 of his countrymen dead. 1971: Bored beyond reason with life in prim, gray, stiflingly Protestant Scotland, newly minted doctor Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) flees to Africa, apparently for no more considered reasons than that it represents everythin... read more
  • Movies-on-TV: Ken Fox's Picks for the Week of Jan. 7 | TVGuide.com's Strike Recovery Guide | 1/6/2008
OK, fine. Perhaps despite our Strike Survival Guide's best efforts, none of the new or returning series premiering this week strike your fancy. If that's the case, peruse TVGuide.com film critic Ken Fox's guide to this week's movies-on-TV.Monday, Jan. 7, at 8 pm/ETThe Last King of Scotland | HBOAtonement star James McAvoy – the subject of serious Oscar buzz – stars opposite last year's best actor-winner Forest Whitaker in this drama about an idealistic Scottish doctor caught up in the horrors of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's reign of terror. • The White Shadow | Kyle's War at Home Blog | 3/16/2007
This week’s episode of The War at Home is entitled "The White Shadow." In it, my character Larry starts writing music and for some reason Dave decides that he can rap over it. Michael Rapaport really liked rapping — in fact, he wrote his own rap for this episode. In an attempt to bulk up, Dean's character decides to stop m-----bating. For this story line we had Tila Tequila come on the show and, within the context of a wet dream, rub her breasts in Dean's face. Dean thought she was really cool.Behind the scenes, Dean and I spent most of the week watching Dax Flame, the greatest human being on the planet! Dax Flame is a very talented young man who started documenting his adventures on his YouTube blog about three months ago. So far there are 45 installments, all of which are truly hilarious. Dax’s mission in life is twofold: 1) He must befriend Jacob, and 2) he must win the heart of Sofia. Maybe one day Dax could be on an episode of The War at Home — both Dean... read more
  • February 1, 2007: Murmurs of the Heart | ER | 2/2/2007
It looks like 2007 is turning out be a very good year for Forest Whitaker. The Oscar nominee (and, by most accounts, front-runner) has turned in yet another bravado performance as the mentally unstable former ER patient Curtis Ames. I don’t think it is a stretch to assume that later this year, this gifted actor will be adding an Emmy to his growing collection of acting accolades. Whitaker really has an uncanny ability to capture the humanity and vulnerability of emotionally tortured characters. (Though I haven’t had a chance to see The Last King of Scotland yet, I have heard he works similar magic with his charismatic portrayal of the supremely unsympathetic Idi Amin.) Even while you hate Ames for torturing our beloved Dr. Kovac, you never lose sight of the fact that the man is operating from a deep reservoir of resentment, pain and loss.I have to admit that I wasn’t at all surprised with the denouement of this particular story line. I knew that ultimately Ames was... read more
  • As the Globes Slowly Spins | Roush Dispatch | 1/16/2007
I sure hope you didn’t skip 24’s literally explosive Night 2—seriously (as Shonda Rhimes would say), how dark is this new season already?—for the Golden Globes Monday night. All the flowing wine seemed to have loosened and thickened nearly everyone’s tongue, resulting in long speeches that combined with a sluggish pace and an epic number of ads to push the show beyond the 11 pm/ET cutoff time. (You know an awards show is badly time-managed when the seriously big winners are forced to hurry through their speeches.)Anyway, to have had a good time, it looks like you really did have to be there this year. And partake of the bubbly.Imagine the collective yawns and groans across the land when that international bummer Babel (this year’s overly contrived Crash) took home the best drama trophy, handed out by Arnold Schwarzenegger on crutches that could have been a symbol for the whole wobbly though star-studded evening. But enough about movies, with this... read more
