This adaptation of the classic Rudyard Kipling novel features a young, bright-eyed Dean Stockwell as Kim, the rebellious, adventure-seeking son of an English envoy in the 1880s in India. Fed up with his school's rigid rules, Kim assumes the guise of a turbaned peasant boy and wanders

through the Indian marketplace. He is befriended by a philosophical lama (Paul Lukas) who treats him with fatherly warmth and offers him invaluable advice, while from Mahbub Ali (Errol Flynn), a flamboyant horse thief who doubles as a British agent, Kim learns the finer points of espionage. The

adventure and fun continue when the three get involved in an explosive political situation as the Russians prepare an invasion of the Khyber Pass. Luxuriously photographed in Technicolor, KIM offers countless panoramic views of India, even though a large portion of the film was shot in California

and the 13-year-old Stockwell never set foot in India. The film kicked around MGM for some time before it finally went into production, with Freddie Bartholomew and Robert Taylor cast in 1938, before WW II halted the project. Later, Mickey Rooney, Conrad Veidt, and Basil Rathbone were to star, but

the tenuous situation that came with the Indian struggle for independence led to another shutdown. When independence was achieved in 1948, MGM finally thought it safe to begin this version.
