A completely faithful--and surprisingly dull--adaptation of the famed novel. MacArthur is the young lad who is cheated out of his inheritance and sold into slavery by Laurie, his uncle. Put on a ship as the cabin boy, he meets Finch, a Scottish loyalist who has asked the captain (Lee) to

take him to Scotland. After MacArthur finds out Lee plans to kill Finch, he and Finch join forces to take over the ship. When the ship runs aground and MacArthur is washed ashore, he overcomes several obstacles and claims his inheritance. Finch sets sail once more, and the two say their farewells.

This is a handsome production, with an excellent cast. But the script's attention to detail ultimately gets in the way of the story. The film was not very successful and Disney ended up televising it on "Wonderful World of Disney" a few years after theatrical release. The studio claimed that the

director, Robert Stevenson, was a distant relative of Robert Louis Stevenson. However, the director later denied this claim. This was one of four versions of Stevenson's tale, the first done in 1938 with Freddie Bartholomew and Warner Baxter, the second done in 1948 with Roddy McDowall and Dan

O'Herlihy, and the last (and best) done in 1971, a British production starring Michael Caine and Trevor Howard.
