Hopper is an outlaw at the turn of the century. After a botched train robbery, he decides it is time to go straight and settles down in Dime Box, Texas. He takes a series of menial jobs but is constantly under the more than slightly jaundiced eye of Johnson, cast against his normal type as

the local sheriff. Hopper just can't cut the straight life and steals the Christmas payroll of a local factory, making a successful getaway with some Indian friends. The film is a nice little satire about many things: the American work ethic, the end of the cowboy era, with a little bit of a

self-parody as well. The supporting cast is excellent. Frawley's direction is even-handed, keeping the comedy at a good pace and letting the characters tell the story. The film was completed in 1971 and titled DIME BOX, but it was released two years later with a new name.
