An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign film in 1960 (losing out to Bergman's THE VIRGIN SPRING), this concentration camp story didn't make it to the US until four years later. It tells the story of an impressionable 14-year-old Jewish girl (Strasberg) who, with her family, is captured by

the Nazis. She is able to change identities with the help of a camp doctor and works her way up to the rank of "kapo," or camp guard. Strasberg becomes more and more obsessed with her power, and eventually falls in love with a Russian prisoner (Terzieff). When her friend Riva commits suicide,

Strasberg is shaken back into reality. She reveals her true identity to the Russian, and suggests a mass breakout. To save the lives of the others Strasberg sacrifices her own. Riva gives a riveting performance as Strasberg's closest friend. There is also a less captivating 90-minute version.
