Kallianiotes, are jealous of Welch's privileged position and make life difficult for her; but Alden, a backwoods behemoth enamored of Welch, becomes her protector. Left to fend for herself when Alden is traded, Welch asserts her independence by refusing to be a part of McCarthy's program. Like

roller derby, KANSAS CITY BOMBER is loud, violent, and occasionally interesting, with characterizations that range from well drawn (Kallianiotes) to obnoxious. Welch, who gives an adequate performance, did her own skating, so the production was delayed for six weeks when she broke her wrist in a

fall.
